Thanksgiving and Fire Works

No, we did not have fireworks for Thanksgiving!  Of course, Thanksgiving was not acknowledged here, except for quietly by a few American missionaries.  We could not find any turkey or pies, so we did the next best thing and went to an American-style hamburger joint and had hamburgers, fries and shakes!  I have to say, they were really good.  We dragged our wonderful Office Elders along, so it would feel more like a celebration!  They both appreciated it, though it didn't have quite the same meaning for the Brazilian Missionary!

Thanksgiving Dinner with
Elder Theime (Brazilian) and Elder Larkin (SLC)

As we walked the mile and a half home (good thing to do after eating so much!) some fireworks went off about a block from where we were.  I commented on how Brazilians love noise and just shoot off fireworks from time to time for no reason.  The Brazilian Elder explained that the periodic fireworks that we hear are letting the drug dealers know that a delivery has arrived.  The location and length of the fireworks lets the dealers know where to pick up the goods.  We asked if the police couldn't crack the code and he said they didn't get involved in the drug trafficking.  I was very glad to get inside our safe little apartment!

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Throughout the day we reviewed our blessings.  You, our family and friends, are right up there with the Gospel and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  How thankful we are for Him and for the opportunity to share the Good News that we are so blessed to have.

Our Love to All!

  1. Oh my gosh- fireworks for drug trafficking? How creepy is that?! I'm glad you got to enjoy your meal before hearing that.
